In the realm of international shipping, customs procedures often represent one of the most daunting challenges for global companies. To address this, Maersk has introduced the Trade & Tariff Studio, a new AI-driven platform that simplifies complex customs operations. As trade environments become increasingly turbulent—with rising tariffs, tighter regulations, and unexpected border delays—this innovation offers clarity and cost-saving opportunities for businesses managing global supply chains.
One of the major issues in international shipments is the decentralized use of local brokers, often scattered across numerous ports and countries. This disjointed setup results in fragmented data, reduced visibility, and frequent overpayment of duties. Maersk’s findings show that companies overpay 5–6% in tariffs due to the lack of centralized optimization. In addition, around 20% of delays stem from poor customs preparation. Even more critically, most businesses fail to take full advantage of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), with only 50–55% of eligible trade leveraging these deals due to their complexity.
The Trade & Tariff Studio leverages artificial intelligence to manage over 6,000 product codes and 20,000+ sub-codes with precision, replacing time-consuming manual processes. AI also enables real-time compliance screening and helps avoid fines or detentions. Updated by Maersk’s global network of 2,700 customs experts, the platform ensures businesses operate with up-to-date regulation data. Initially available for U.S. imports starting June 28, a global rollout is expected by August.
