The Port of Gothenburg is set to solidify its position as a leading hub for sustainable logistics through a new partnership with the Norwegian company Hydrogen Solutions AS (HYDS). The project involves the construction of a green hydrogen electrolyser, scheduled to become operational by 2029. This initiative marks a significant step in the port’s transition toward fossil-free fuels, enabling a cleaner energy shift for various transport modes across the region.
Following a project acquisition from Statkraft, HYDS has secured the necessary environmental permits and financing to move forward. The facility is designed with a capacity of 5 to 10 MW, capable of producing between two and four tonnes of green hydrogen daily. To put this into perspective, this output can replace up to 20,000 liters of diesel, potentially cutting CO₂ emissions by as much as 60 tonnes per day.
The Port of Gothenburg is systematically building a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure. With a public refueling station already in operation by Hydri, the addition of local production creates a complete ecosystem—from generation to end-use. As industrial, maritime, and logistics activities converge at this strategic location, the demand for renewable fuels continues to rise. Final investment decisions are expected by early 2027, paving the way for a future where heavy transport emits nothing but water vapor.
