World Sustainable Transport Day 2025

World Sustainable Transport Day, observed annually on 26 November, takes on heightened importance in 2025 as the global community prepares for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035). Sustainable transport plays a crucial role in connecting communities, ensuring access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, while supporting resilient economies through job creation, poverty reduction, and enhanced community well-being.

Following the COP30 climate conference in Brazil, this year’s focus highlights road transport’s central role in achieving the UN Decade’s six strategic pillars: equitable access; decarbonisation; logistics efficiency; people-centred urban mobility; safe and clean transport; and science, technology, and innovation. The decade, starting 1 January 2026, aims to transform mobility and logistics globally, promoting sustainability across all transport modes.

IRU emphasizes the use of practical tools to achieve these goals, including UN conventions like TIR and CMR, as well as IRU’s certification programs and Green Compact decarbonisation initiatives. IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto noted that progress already made on sustainability awareness sets the stage for tangible results during the decade, focusing on safer, greener, and more efficient mobility worldwide. The UN General Assembly officially established the day in 2023, following IRU’s proposal and Turkmenistan’s sponsorship.
