At this year’s SMM shipping exhibition in Hamburg, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) presented an innovative design for the world’s largest containership. Developed by CSSC’s Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, this vessel has a staggering capacity of 27,500 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), exceeding the largest ships currently in operation by more than 3,000 TEU.
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) holds the current record with its 24,346 TEU ships, delivered in 2023. Over the past two decades, containership sizes have grown exponentially, but many shipping companies are now opting for vessels in the 16,000 TEU range, which are more adaptable across various shipping routes, as opposed to the mega-ships primarily serving the Asia-Europe trade routes.
The 31st SMM event highlighted innovations in maritime energy transition and digital transformation, drawing over 2,000 exhibitors from 70 countries. The introduction of this massive containership design represents a notable milestone in the evolution of shipping technologies.
