Green Freight Corridors: A New Era for European Heavy Transport 21

The path toward decarbonizing European logistics has reached a major turning point. At the IAA Transportation event in Hanover, battery giant CATL and DHL Group signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop Europe’s first “Green Freight Corridors,” accelerating the electrification of high-capacity road freight transport.

This initiative aims to overcome the traditional limitations of long-haul electric trucking by combining the operational demands of an extensive logistics network with cutting-edge technological infrastructure. The project incorporates megawatt-level ultra-fast charging stations, battery swapping infrastructure, and mobile energy storage systems. Concurrently, CATL introduced its new modular commercial vehicle platform, TECTRANS II, designed to deliver up to 1,000 kilometers of range with an 80% charge achieved in just 25 minutes.

Beyond vehicle technology, the project addresses the critical challenge of grid integration and energy management along heavy-traffic transport arteries. By deploying decentralized energy storage units alongside high-power chargers, the infrastructure can absorb peak demand without overburdening local power networks. This integrated approach ensures consistent power delivery for fleet operators, minimizing downtime and enabling predictable, automated scheduling for cross-border haulage.

The primary goal of this collaboration is to establish a scalable, replicable model across major EU transport corridors. By creating high-efficiency energy routes, the industry will be able to drastically reduce CO₂ emissions across supply chains without compromising the speed, reliability, and flexibility of international deliveries.
